May Meeting

Here’s your reminder that our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 6th from 7 to 9 PM.  Doors open around 6:45 PM, we recommend you arrive early to facilitate starting on time.

At our May meeting, we are thrilled to host one of North America’s most accomplished modellers, Steven Hustad.  Steven is a retired architect who has been modeling since the age of 5, getting back into the hobby seriously and continuously since 1989.  He is widely respected within the modelling community for his refined craftsmanship, particularly in small-scale aircraft and armor. Best known for his work in 1/72nd scale, Steven has developed a reputation for combining technical excellence with narrative storytelling—especially through highly detailed dioramas that uniquely capture atmosphere and historical context. His work has been visible at major shows where fellow hobbyists consistently regard his builds as benchmarks of quality and artistry.  Most recently, Steven won Best Aircraft at HeritageCon last March with a 1/72 scale Mitsubishi Ki-21.   As he is based out of Minneapolis, we will host him virtually via Google Meet (a free version of Zoom).  Don’t miss this opportunity to meet one of the greats of our hobby!

We will also hold a raffle after Steven’s presentation, so please make sure to bring your membership cards as the raffle is only open to carded members!

Seminar: How to Become a Better Miniature Painter

IPMS Toronto member and master figure painter Paul Stockley presented a fascinating seminar at our April meeting where he outlined steps and techniques that any of us can apply to become better figure painters. Paul is a highly skilled and experienced modeller with a strong background bringing scale figures to life through careful observation, refined technique, and a deep understanding of colour, light, and texture. His work consistently demonstrates how thoughtful painting can transform a figure from a simple accessory into a compelling focal point.

Please find his presentation attached below:

Photo-etched parts are the bane of many modellers because they combine extreme thinness with zero forgiveness. They’re springy, razor-sharp, and smaller than the tools meant to handle them—so they ping off into the void, deform if you look at them wrong, and demand perfect bends on the first try. They won’t respond to normal cement, require cyanoacrylate or solder, and highlight every handling mistake once painted. The result is exquisite scale fidelity at the cost of patience, eyesight, and occasionally one’s sanity.

Fortunately for us, our distinguished guest Darren White of Peel Scale Modellers will be conducting a workshop on working with Photo Etched (PE) parts and accessories.  As a talented and highly accomplished scale modeller who specializes in ships, Darren is an expert in working with PE – he promises to make your experience with PE parts a little less painful!

February Draw!

We will be doing a draw for a beautiful model donated to the club by Steve Fall.  To be eligible you must show your membership cardso please don’t forget to bring it and wear it with pride!
